Sieh Yih Chapel

aadmin

Sieh Yih Chapel (Also called息焉堂, Catholic Country Church, Catholic Assumption Church) is located at 1 Kele Lu (Coca-Cola Road [West to East], near Hami Road [North to South]) in Changning district. It was designed by László Ede Hudec (Ladislaus Hudec) in 1929 in memory of the Cathedral of the Assumption (Also called Assumption Cathedral, Cathedral of the Dormition, Успенский Собор, Uspensky, Uspensky sobor) in Moscow, which was originally a wooden structure built in the 12th century (Note: Moscow was razed by the Mongols in the winter of 1238). A new church was constructed out of limestone in 1326 and has been rebuilt and redesigned multiple times since. It is devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary (Theotokos) following the Orthodox Christian Tradition and has been used as a medieval burial ground. Likewise, Sieh Yih Chapel is used for devotion to Mary and has burial grounds (with funeral and memorial services offered). It is built with reinforced concrete and covered in cement mortar. It features a dome and bell tower. It was opened in 1931 and remained in operation until the exodus of christian groups from Shanghai. It was used as a school in the 1960s. It reopened in 2008 and offers Chinese Catholic service on Sunday mornings at 8am.
