City Engine

Saw this unique shop from a distance and decided to give it a try. Upon entering I was greeted by a variety of R2D2 style robots which stood motionless and voiceless in a semi-circle. From here, I found a motion chair for a VR roller coaster, which looked dangerous and fun. Drones! DJI Maverick and […]

Bailian ShiJi Shopping Mall

At Century Ave Metro Station (Line 2, 4, 6 and 9) just before exit 6, is the entrance to the Bailian ShiJi Shopping Mall. This initially appears to be a small mall, but if you go around the corner and down the set of escalators to the food court, to the right, you will find […]

Future Forum

I got news of the “Prediction: Achieving the Future”; “Future of AI and Security” by the Future Forum at New York University’s Shanghai Campus so I had to attend, as recently I had peripheral involvement with the NF2 Tumor Genomics (AI Genomics) Hackathon. I made my way to the NYU Shanghai Campus on Century Ave, […]

Fun Box

The new fad is for automated (staff-less) convenience stores, which is attempting to fill the need already filled by vending machines. This vending machine takes the pre-made meals found at many convenience stores and uses the benefits of a vending machine. You can pre-order online via their app or purchase via the vending machine’s touch screen.

MMC Experience Pass

I got information about a free Experience Pass to the MMC and took up the opportunity to go to the event. While the vast majority of the show was for Virtual/Augmented/Mixed Reality, there was some modern and experimental technology there too. The highlight for me was a fold-able drone with a 80 min flight time, […]

Raffle City Changing

Across the street (diagonal), from Cloud Nine at Zongshan Park Station, or east of Line 3 or 4, lies Raffle City Changing. This unique little mall is initially difficult to navigate considering the maps are inaccurate and do not tell you some important details, such as that there are two separate buildings (East Building and […]

La Bodeguita Del Medio

Next to the Ascott on Hengshan road (191 Hengshan Lu), a Cuban Bar and Restaurant has opened up. It was a rainy night when I arrived but the bar and restaurant was empty for the most part. The staff mentioned the dancers having visa problems, so not being available. The prices were pretty high compared […]

Canada Day

Cancham Shanghai held ‘Canada 150 Street Festival’ at Waitanyuan (133 Yuanmingyuan Road) on July 1st between 2 to 8 pm. This event was much more commercial then other Canada Day celebrations, but that is in line with recent modifications of Cancham to become a business and trade organization versus the fun and family association of […]

Taco Bell

Taco Bell in Shanghai! Its been so long since their last attempt at this market, with their ridiculous Taco Bell Grande. Back then a burrito cost 80 rmb and was drowning in cheese. It held an excellent location across from People’s Square on Nanjing Road and was staffed with little Señoritas wearing giant sombreros. Flash […]

Located at 66 Lvshun Road, about a 10 min walk from the Bund along Huangpu Road is the W Hotel (You can also take Dongdaming Lu/ East Daming Road). It offers 339 rooms and 35 suites and is part of the Starwood brands chain (Category 5). It is the anchor for the Sinar Mas Plaza […]

Viewing Platform

A new viewing platform was opened on July 1st. Cross Suzhou creek, head west to the Seagull Hotel. Look towards the parking area of the Seagull hotel, and you should see a gate with a security guard. He has a card to scan, which he will do automatically to open the gate for you. The […]

Dental II

Went to the dentist over the weekend. Due to weekend internet issues, I had to get an 3D x-ray again, but this time was with a newer machine – Kavo Pan Exam Plus. The root was re-treated and tested for suitability for a post. The current plan is for a post, a post cover and […]

Amyitis

I got an invite to a new co-working space opening just off Huaihai Road. Mixspace Amyitis (named after the licentious Achaemenid Princess) was all that the name would suggest. Upon arriving the elevator did not work, so had to climb to 3rd floor. When getting to the reception desk, they did not have my reservation, […]

Dental Issue

A couple days ago, I was chewing a nice hickory nut when noticed a mis-alignment in my teeth. Upon closer inspection it appeared that a crown had cracked at its base, which I assumed was the location of an implant. I contracted my dentist, but she was enjoying her day off. She did contact a […]

IGcafe

Went for a coffee break at IGCafe on Anfu Road. They updated since I was last there, with a little store on the main floor. I went up to the second floor and got their special for 50 rmb, it included a slice of coffee cheesecake and a latte. After relaxing for a bit, I […]

La Fete du Quebec

Yesterday found the ‘La Fete Nationale du Quebec” on the 5th floor of the Crystal Galleria Mall. Prices ranged from 200 rmb, all the way up to 350 at the door. It was fun to take pictures of the Quebec flag and to see the fleur-de-lis. https://cancham.eventbank.cn/event/9780/ http://www.quebecois.sh/ (http://monsecret.club/dev/shangaiqc/) http://www.international.gouv.qc.ca/zh/shanghai
